Black Crown The Darkest Drae Book 3 eBook Kelly St Clare Raye Wagner
I loved books one and two in this series and hoped the story would continue for several more installations, but alas, this is the last we will read about Ryn and Tyrrick. This really bums me out because I loved the heat the characters had for each other and I was hoping for a more imaginative and complex ending than this. It’s good but not great which is really disappointing if you loved the other books. So yes read it if you’ve come this far, but be prepared to scratch your head at a few of the strange bits in plot and some ho-hum romance.

Black Crown The Darkest Drae Book 3 eBook Kelly St Clare Raye Wagner Reviews
Kelly and Raye you broke me, put me back together and broke me again and repeat.
Leading up to this release of TDD i re-read book 1 (Blood Oath) and book 2 (Shadow Wings) because i needed book 3 to be as epic as book 1 and 2... well you delivered and then some. There were many laughing moments and some "that did not just happen" moments.
I don't think ill ever look at a potato, pumpkin or pancakes without thinking of Ryn and Tyrrik or TDD.
I give it 3.5 stars.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked the book, but I just didn't love it the way I did in the previous books.
Cons of this book
1. Word choice felt too modern for a society supposedly in the middle ages.
2. Really slow. Don't know exactly why, but I had to really force myself to read it. Every few pages I would get bored and find myself thinking about other stuff instead of reading.
SPOILER (SORT OF)
3. The author does the bit where important people are killed but not actually killed. Which I find super annoying. She didn't even offer much explanation for it. Oh no, that person's dead, oh wait, no they're not you only THOUGHT they were dead. Either kill them or don't. Or make their miraculous revival more believable.
Pros of this book
1. The story was wrapped up cleanly with a good ending.
2. Tyrrick and Ryn are just as adorable as ever and their relationship really develops along the way in this book.
3. The author kept things interesting in the story with twists and turns you don't see coming.
Well done!! Seriously one of my new favorites! The whole series was very well written. This book picks up shortly after the events of the last one and we find our heroine stuck in a gigantic pumpkin. War is coming and the allies are finally getting together. Ryn and Tyrrick’s relationship grows stronger and they give playing cards a while new meaning. They are so perfect together! I think everyone wants their own Tyrrick after reading this series! Ryn does not disappoint and keeps up her witty jokes throughout the book. The ending was absolutely perfect!
The main characters are likable, except for most of the first book. However, their behavior and characteristics don't evolve during the books much. Her powers do during the first 2 books. Primarily maddening to me, were the mistakes the 2 main characters kept repeating walking into potential enemy camp with no plan whatsoever and no reconnoitering or even basic observation of the new area prior to showing up. Then, they're shocked with the results. This is something the supposedly successfully scary lead drae of over 100 years should know how to do. You, the reader, can understand the initial naivete of the 18 year old girl. But, she doesn't learn from her mistakes. Secondly, the obvious YA aspect is a bit ridiculous no cussing (holy pancakes!) or hints of graphic sex beyond kissing but graphic violence was fine (e.g. intestines spilling on 2 or 3 enemies) ?!?
4.5 stars. So I had a difficult time getting through this one for some reason. I have been going through a really bad book slump lately so I’m not sure if that is the reason why. I absolutely loved the first two books, couldn’t put them down, and didn’t want them to end. I’m just not sure what was different this time for me. Nothing really surprised me, not even the ending. I even expected the ending. The whole book just felt like a means to an end. I enjoyed it overall, but I will at least leave the rating as 5 stars because it could be that I’m just in a bad book slump, and also because this series is just one of my favorites and there was nothing wrong with this book. I just didn’t find anything special to it unfortunately.
While I really liked this book and the ending, I find that it skips on some serious spots and leaves out a great opportunity to develop the character of Draedyn. I found that he lacked a lot of depth and there was so much opportunity to explore his love for his daughter, why he did what he did, his motivations, etc.
I still liked the first book the most.
Books 1-3 skirted the YA/adult line in terms of violence (not so much the sexual aspects). Books 1&2 were well paced throughout, but book 3 was very well paced up until around 50%. At that point, the pacing became frantic and the plot a bit sloppy. There were several times I found myself re-reading because something didn't make sense, and I wasn't sure if I'd accidentally skipped forward.
*SPOILER*
The final scene of the battle was the most confusing example of this-- Ryn threw down a dagger inside Draedyn's abode then her and Tyrrik destroyed the abode. Then when she confronts Draedyn in battle she somehow remembers the dagger is in her pocket. Then a bit later the author says everyone but Ryn and Azuli Queen is dying or dead; but, then suddenly life goes on for like 5-10 pages before they explain that no one actually died...?.... It was not well written, so it felt disorienting. And then the authors, presumably because the book was YA and YA's can't understand what they read, give tons of exposition about why who did what, and what lessons were learned. This bothered me even more than the weird pacing & plotting.
Hence, why I deducted 1 star. The book series was fun. And despite its flaws I would re-read it again (and why I bought it). 4 stars.
I loved books one and two in this series and hoped the story would continue for several more installations, but alas, this is the last we will read about Ryn and Tyrrick. This really bums me out because I loved the heat the characters had for each other and I was hoping for a more imaginative and complex ending than this.
