Shark Bait Grab Your Pole Book 1 eBook Jenn Cooksey
A few days before reading Shark Bait, I was tweeting about another book and got into a conversation with Jenn Cooksey (which may have involved Peanut Butter Fudge Ice Cream!) and from there? She asked if I'd be interested in participating in her blog hop, so of course I said yes!! And immediately downloaded her book, Shark Bait. From there? There was no turning back. None. I was in love. I have ZERO hesitation in saying that this is the best YA book I've read this year and has firmly grasped a spot on my top ten of all time!! And, if I could possibly? I would love to read it again for the first time. From page one, I was sucked in - I had absolutely nothing in common with Camie, the main character and fell on the other end of the spectrum in high school. (Re: I was so NOT innocent and trying to stay that way!) But I loved her, I found her endearing. And I felt so sorry for her starting school in the middle of the term in a new place, especially since her Mom's cancer diagnosis flipped her life upside down.
And the rest of the cast? I could gush on and on for pages, but I'll make it quick! (Because really, you NEED to read this book yourself.) Tristan? The boy-toy? Holy cow, every page he was on transported me back to high school and the bright blue lockers and the 2 years older than me hunk, Eric. (I'm sorry, I know Jenn said Taylor Kitsch, but in my mind? Tristan was totally Eric from my high school days.) And new best friend Kate? I loved how she pulled Camie out of her shell, loved ever scene with her! But my favorite supporting role? Definitely, hands down? Goes to Jillian, the little sister who has me wishing I could trade in my kid sister!!
Now, characters aside? This book is fabulous. Beginning to end. Jenn Cooksey captures the hell that is high school in a way that is so true, yet has you wishing you could go back and do it all again! And she leaves nothing out of the experience - so many YA books skirt around the party life of high schoolers, but not this one! (And from my experience? It was pretty accurate, not that I'm admitting to anything, I mean - my mom reads my blog!)
Jenn's writing is fabulous, but what I possibly loved more? The many MANY references to John Hughes films and other 80's phenomena that made me think maybe the 80s weren't so bad after all! This book had me grinning like a fool and then laughing like a hyena the whole time, I can NOT wait until the next book comes out! (So far? Jenn has mentioned 4 books in the Grab Your Pole series! FOUR GLORIOUS BOOKS!)
I'll quit gushing, and leave you with this. If you can remotely tolerate Contemporary YA? This book will turn you into a fan!! If you love Contemp YA? Then this book will keep you turning pages all night long! So go, pick it up! You NEED to read this book.

Shark Bait Grab Your Pole Book 1 eBook Jenn Cooksey Reviews
I feel like I should start this review by stating that I hardly ever read YA. I sort of have an aversion to the genre (or maybe teenagers in general) and it really, really takes a lot of convincing for me to read YA. If it wasn't for the enthusiasm I'd seen from other bloggers, I don't think I would have ever decided to read this series. With that said, I'm so stinking happy that I decided to finally start this series because I enjoyed reading the hell out of Shark Bait. Jenn Cookesey had me hooked (pun intended) right from the get go.
After being home schooled for most of her life, 15-year-old Cameron 'Camie' Ramsey is finally going to enter the shark infested waters known as high school. As if the first day of school wasn't nerve wracking enough, Camie and her 12-year-old sister, Jillian, are going to be entering schools in a new city where they don't know very many people aside from their extended family. Aside from almost doing a face plant in front of most of the student body, Camie's first of day school couldn't have gone any better. She makes new girlfriends, loves her classes (with the exception to geometry class) and even meets the love of her life/soulmate, Tristan Daniels.
"Jeez...the mating rituals of teenagers are really quite a confusing concept to grasp."
I could go over all the sordid details of what happens in Shark Bait (and there is a lot) but, I would rather you read about all the shenanigans Camie and her group of friends get into. I will say that all the typical high school drama occurs like dealing with mean girls, rapid rumor mill, going to football games, drunken house parties, and swooning over hot boys. Camie and her new gang of friends definitely have an eventful life and had me giggling like a high school girl over everything that happened.
One of the best things I loved about Shark Bait were all the impossible not to love characters. Camie was an absolute hoot, and one of the best contemporary heroines I've ever met, and if I were in high school I would get in line to be one of her best friends. Her running commentary of what had become of her life was absolutely hilarious. She's a sweet girl with a good sense of humor, great taste in music, and even greater taste in movies and television. I loved all the old school movie and television references she makes which totally gave her major kudos points in my book. She's pretty clueless about the hierarchy of high school and even more clueless when it comes to boys. I couldn't hep myself but get giddy with her when she received her first text kiss or when she gets her real first kiss. But even with her lack of experience, she's got a good head on her shoulders and trudges along the windy road of being a teenager.
"His name is Tristan Daniels. He's beautiful and I'll hug him and pet him. and squeeze him, and call him George."
Another major character in this story is Tristan Daniels. Now I will warn you, there is a pretty good chance you will get all giddy over this cutie. Tristan is the top dog in school. He's a junior and the captain of the water polo team and swim team. He's got stunning blue eyes that you'll get lost in and a lean, muscular, surfer boy body you'll drool over. The boy is just drop dead gorgeous but he's also got a reputation of being a mysterious man whore. But that doesn't deter Camie from falling head over heels for him. It was love at first sight for Camie and throughout the whole book she does everything she can to get the boy who is pretty unattainable to notice her and make him fall as hard for her as she did for him. Now I don't want you to think Camie goes and makes a fool of herself to get the attention of the hot guy in school. Even though she's determined to make the love of her life fall for her, she sticks true to herself and doesn't break out of her normal character; an aspect that I really respected Camie and Jenn Cooksey to sticking to. There is nothing I hate more when young characters feel like they need to change who they are to catch the guy they want. If the hot guy can't accept who you are then they aren't worth you time or drool!
"Okay. You know the guy, your future brother-in-law? Well, Kate and I are stalking him and plotting to make him wanna be my boyfriend."
Like I said, all the characters in this series are absolutely loveable. Aside from Camie and Tristan, you also get to know their fellow classmates Jeff, Katy, Melissa, and Pete. This gang provided as many laughs as Camie and Tristan and I am definitely looking forward to getting more of these hooligans (okay, they aren't really hooligans.....i just like to refer to all teenagers as hooligans) in future books. Another major secondary character that had me totally ROFL-ing was Camie's younger sister, Jillian. This 12-year-old is a freaking evil genius and I'm really in awe of her! You really need to read this book to find out how she uses her evil genius brain but after reading this book I want to be her apprentice. I DEFINITELY cannot wait to see what other tricks she has up her sleeves and I really am scared for the folks that go down in her shit list.
As I mentioned earlier, Shark Bait had me hooked right at the get go. Jenn Cooksey totally rocked my face off with this book and I'm surprised to say I'm really looking forward to reading more books from this YA. Like I said, I'm not a huge YA fan but Jenn Cooksey and her Grab Your Pole series is one that I will make an exception for. With a loveable main couple, hilarious secondary characters, and an entertaining storyline that will have you wishing you were a student in this San Diego high school, Shark Bait is one book that you do not want to miss! I am soooo totally stoked to jump into book two, The Other Fish in the Sea, and get more of Camie, Tristan and the rest of the GYP gang. Seriously folks, you need to read this book.
4-4.5 stars. This is a witty and quirky high school aged novel starring Camie, who has been home schooled until now, as she starts her first public high school experience as a sophomore. Camie has a mature voice with eloquent vocabulary, yet her voice is still appropriate for her age. She is knowledgeable and savvy in a lot of ways except perhaps socially, and even more so when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex. Tristan is the popular guy at school who can't be tied down to a girlfriend, but Camie is giving him second thoughts about that. I think the most amusing part of this story is reading the conversations between the characters and Camie's inner dialogue, it brought back a lot of memories of high school and how girls tend to overanalyze and read into guys' behavior down to the minute details. The characters themselves are lovable, including Camie's younger sister Jillian who is a force to be reckoned with. There's a great amount of humor and sarcasm. I adored Tristan, too, it was a new feeling for him to pursue a girl and actually have to go at her pace rather than his own. Miscommunications are bound to happen and when the truths come spilling out, Tristan and Camie have to decide if they are willing to trust one another or go their separate ways. Definitely a cute and fun YA read.
