The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest A Medieval Fairy Tale Melanie Dickerson 9780718026240 Books

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is the first of Melanie’s medieval books for older readers. Odette Menkels, the heroine is 21 (not that this older heroine bothered my girls at all—the youngest of them finished the book first). Because of her background, she discovers within herself a desire to help the poorest and most vulnerable of her fellow townspeople—the orphaned and very poor children. While she is certain that God looks in favor at her scheme to steal from the rich by poaching game from the local noble’s estate, as she becomes friends with the young man entrusted by the noble to catch the poacher, she starts to question her convictions.

Odette finds herself torn between her growing attraction for the man tasked with catching her and the respectability of marrying another suitor who’s wealth would allow her to help the poor in a more traditional way.

The author does a superb job of exploring the character’s motives and feelings so that the reader understands why they react to each new plot twist they way that they do. Readers who have dealt with betrayal at the hands of friends or family members will especially relate to the main characters, Odette and Jorgen, as they explore what it means to forgive.

The details about medieval life sprinkled throughout the story make the setting come alive without detracting from the plot.

If you’re looking for a great story with a little romance, a little mystery and a lot of character, look no further than The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest.

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest A Medieval Fairy Tale Melanie Dickerson 9780718026240 Books Reviews

Odette Menkels has a soft spot for orphans. After all, she is one herself. She feels gratitude towards her Uncle Rutger who took her in after she lost her parents. She has been loyal to him since.

Odette notices all the orphans and decides that it is her Christian duty to help take care of them. Since she is good with a longbow, she decides that she can help feed the children. So by day she teaches them how to read and by night, she hunts deer to feed them. In Robin Hood style, she takes from the rich to give to the poor.

When she meets Jorgan Hartman and finds that he is the margraves forester, she wishes to avoid him. But he is handsome and she does enjoy his company and finds herself in his company more and more. Then he discovers that there is a poacher in Thornbeck Forest and he must find him. After all, he is stealing from the king. Odette asks questions and he tells her all. They seem to be building a relationship until the night of the margraves ball, where Odette dresses as a swam.

Back and forth, Odette has to decide what is best for everyone and what she must do with her life. In true Melanie Dickerson style, the author weaves a tale that both entertains and worries the reader. Will Odette find true love or will she marry for the sake of caring for the orphans? Will Jorgan discover that she is the poacher? And if so, what will her punishment be? The story is intended to be an adult book, but my pre-teen sons enjoyed it too. We are looking forward to more from this author, and in this series.
A skillful storyteller, Melanie Dickerson successfully enchants in her newest medieval novel, The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest. Her character, Odette, seeks to help feed the poorest children in her village by hunting in the king’s forest by night. Jorgen, a forester, seeks justice for the poacher who murdered the man who raised him. Both characters desire to serve God, but find that making the right decision takes wisdom, courage, and steadfast faith, even if it means sacrificing the desires of their hearts. You’ll be swept into the romance the moment Odette and Jorgen meet at the summer festival, and will be holding your breath as the hunter tries to outwit and outrun the forester under the light of the moon! Find out who is friend and who is foe in this exciting romance by Melanie Dickerson!
I was fortunate and so excited to receive an Advanced Reader's copy of The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest, and I wasn't disappointed.
Odette not only illegally kills deer to feed the poor and orphaned children, she rescues a young girl from a brothel and teaches the poor children to read.
Odette falls in love with Jorgen, the forester, who is trying to catch the poacher. She also finds out that her uncle is not the man that she thought he was, even though he has raised her and has always been very kind. He tries to persuade her to marry a man she does not love.
After Odette is injured and captured by the forester, she expects to be thrown into the dungeon.
What will become of the poor and orphaned children is paramount on her mind. Melanie does a brilliant job of working everything out in the end. It was very emotional for me. I loved it and will give this book 5 stars.
Melanie Dickerson has done it again. Her Thornbeck series is a hit. Book one, The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is a charming and entertaining tale of a young woman, Odette, who poaches off the margrave’s forest in order to feed the poor children, which she also teaches. Jorgen is the margrave’s forester and is determined to rid the forest of its poacher, as well as avenge the death of his father who was killed by a poacher. When Odette meets Jorgen at a Midsummer festival and they begin to have affections for each other, this complicates everything. For little does Jorgen know that Odette is the poacher. Filled with exciting characters, a twist on a couple of fairytales, including Robin Hood and The Swan Princess, and an excellent story with plenty of plot twists, readers are not going to want to put this exciting new adventure, fairytale down!
